About Us
The Sharangadev School of Music and Culture was established by Dr. Sangeeta Shankar, under the mentorship of the legendary musician and violinist, Padmabhushan Dr. N. Rajam. The Shankar family is renowned for its rich, seven-generation legacy in music, which continues with the eighth generation through Dr. Sangeeta Shankar’s daughters, Ragini and Nandini Shankar. The school is dedicated to providing excellence in music education, offering a curriculum designed to suit each student’s level and aspirations. Beginners are taught the foundational principles to build a strong music career. Students with intermediate skills are guided through a progression that suits their musical journey, while advanced students and performers receive customized sessions tailored to their expertise. Additionally, the school offers access to a beautiful Gurukul located at Swar Sadhana Tapovan in Samanur, Tamil Nadu, where students can experience traditional, in-person music education in a serene, residential environment. The Gurukul provides an immersive experience, where students can live for a week or two in modern, well-equipped tents and engage in close interactions with their Guru, learning music amidst the peaceful surroundings of nature. Dr. Rajam, an Emeritus Professor and former Dean of the School of Music and Performing Arts at Banaras Hindu University, taught music for over 40 years. Her pioneering violin technique earned her the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship from the Government of India. Dr. Sangeeta Shankar, a Ph.D. in Music from BHU, has also been honored with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award by the President of India. She is a renowned performer, composer, educator, and gifted orator, whose words resonate deeply with audiences. Ragini Shankar, a mechanical engineer, and Nandini Shankar, a chartered accountant, have both chosen music as their primary passion. Mahesh Raghvan, with degrees from Scotland and Dubai, has transformed modern music with his innovative use of the iPad, bringing a fresh perspective to contemporary music creation. The Sharangadev School of Music and Culture offers a harmonious blend of traditional wisdom and modern innovation, ensuring a comprehensive and enriching musical journey for all its students.
